Building on the Past; Faithful for the Future Re-launch goals – 2021-2023

Over the last several years, we have been praying and seeking God’s direction for our next steps with regards to our ministries and facilities. God has blessed us abundantly but has continued to say “not yet” with regard to a major capital construction project. This answer has been tiring, but it also has been amazingly helpful as we continue to refine our understanding of God’s calling.

Such a time is NOW! Cross’ school, children and youth ministries have continued to grow over the years. While COVID caused a brief setback, God is once again expanding the impact and reach of the Good News through the ministries of Cross. Our rooms are full and we are out of space. 350 students are currently enrolled and 1 15 of them are in our preschool. The present and future are bright.

Cross is a place of refuge and hope for many who find themselves hurting and lost in our current societal climate. Our government is increasing its control over education and curriculum standards, which squeezes out biblical truth of sex, gender, marriage, creation and even truth.

For the past 140 years, disciples at Cross have responded to Gods’ call to be beacons of light and hope in a dark or difficult time in the world. That time is NOW! This spring we will break ground on a new facility. Each of us will need to do our part to accomplish this inspiring goal.

Any new pledge will be added to the 2 million dollars that have already been received. All new pledges will be utilized to reach the goal of the 6 million dollars needed to complete these projects over the next two years.

The time is NOW! God has brought you here, at this time, for His Kingdom’s greater purposes. Will you prayerfully join the Family of Faith at Cross as we seek to accomplish His purposes together? Every one of us has a part. Seek God’s direction to determine what part He has for you! It will be challenging, but it will also be exciting. Thank you for letting God lead you and allowing me to lead through you.

1. Immediate Needs for Sanctuary

  • Lighting and Painting:  $80,000

Our sanctuary turned 30 years old in 2021! We upgraded to an LED theatrical lighting system and completed long overdue painting.  These upgrades will allow all of our worship opportunities to effectively move out of the gymnasium and into a more sacred environment.

The new lighting will improve our sanctuary cantatas, school programs, Christmas services, and special Children’s Ministry events.  So far we have received rave reviews both from people attending worship in person and those tuning
in online.

2. Children’s Ministry Renovations

  • Update and Modernize:  $100,000

These funds will be used to finish out the dedicated Children’s Ministry space on the second floor of the addition. This would be the first dedicated (non-classroom) space for children on Sunday in our history!

Families will have a welcoming and secure check-in environment for their young disciples. Age appropriate breakout areas will be available to each unique grade level. These spaces will have furniture specially designed to be adaptable for the unique needs of this dynamic ministry.

A special large group space will provide a place for all the age groups to interact together. This space will also be utilized for multi-generational gatherings which are so important for the spiritual development of us all.

3. New School Construction Phase 1: Cold Storage Space

  • First Floor Build-out:  $3.9 Million

This will include a 70-foot addition to the west and the flooring for the second story of the current cold storage. We will build out eight classrooms and two large learning commons on the first floor. In addition, there will be a large motor space/dining area for our preschool.

  • Kitchen/Cafeteria Build-out: $200,000

The space for the new kitchen and cafeteria will be on the first floor of the new school building but will not be completed until funds are secured. Until then we will continue to utilize the kitchen in the fellowship hall for lunches.

  • Science/STEM Lab: $150,000

Current plans call for expansion and the addition of larger science and technology resources to an existing classroom. This will not occur until funds are available.

  • School Entrance / Welcome Lobby: $60,000

The completed plans create renovated space in our current west lobby for additional security, a parents’ lounge, reception area, etc. This section would not be completed until the designated funds are raised along with the STEM lab.

4. New School Construction Phase 2: Second Floor

  • Second Floor:$1.5 Million

The new facility will feature many “Learning Commons” areas. These Commons will have a diversity of furniture and spaces to accommodate individual and group learning.  Theses spaces were the number one request of our teachers who currently extend the classroom environment into the halls, floors and any spaces they can find.

The second story will provide eight additional classrooms, dedicated Children’s Ministry space, restroom facilities, a fine arts room, and teacher resource space. We cannot delay this addition. The current preschool numbers indicate we will need this additional space immediately!

5. Additional Needs

  • Vehicle Storage and Maintenance:  $90,000

Our ministry has been blessed to be a blessing with vehicles to transport the young and old!  We perform much of the maintenance on the vehicles right here at Cross year-round. In an effort to be good stewards of the life of these vehicles, to provide shelter for those who service them, and to move them away from their current location, we are looking to build a vehicle barn that will also have storage for ongoing ministry needs.

  • Updated Organ:  $80,000

Our current organ is quickly nearing the end of its serviceable life.  Every week, our organists are not certain which keys and ranks will be available to use.  Excessive and expensive maintenance is needed to keep the old technology up and running.  Newer technology allows better sound, cheaper maintenance and a longer life expectancy.  (That is pretty rare these days!)

  • Larger Events:  $75,000

Our school functions, special events and holiday services demand space for larger crowds. With the gym no longer an option, we need to make some long overdue updates to accommodate these gatherings in the sanctuary. We plan to make the musicians’ platform more permanent and blend it in with the chancel area. We also wish to make additional sound improvements (including acoustical panels to reduce the harsh echoes) and to improve the worship experience in the overflow space.

  • Campaign Tithe

Cross is a tithing congregation. This means we give away 10% of our offerings to support the work of the Church in the world. We will have approximately $600,000 to give away and bless others from this campaign!  So far we have voted:

  • Lutheran Indian Mission:  $20,000

Construction/expansion of their “Haskill Light” student center. This will better accommodate their campus ministry to Native American students.

  • Lutheran Church in Israel:  $40,000

The believers in Israel have been gathering without a pastor for many years.  This gift was part of a three-year plan to launch a full-time Lutheran pastoral ministry in Israel.  It is still going in year four!

  • Caring Hands Thrift Shop: 5% of the total raised as a mission donation

Our thrift shop is a blessing to the community. It allows us to bless those in need and pray with people who would never come “inside a church.” Currently, Caring Hands has over 3,000 square feet of storage in the current “cold storage” space at Cross, plus there is an outdoor “tent city” in the Caring Hands parking lot to receive and sort donations. New space is needed for storage, sorting and retail. God continues to bless this ministry!

Where are we now?

The above proposals total just over $6 Million which is about the same cost as our initial proposal in 2017. All dollars are estimates and are subject to price change at the time the projects are able to be completed. We have had over $2 million pledged so far and much of those pledges have already been received. Some of the pledges are “in kind” gifts that lower the costs. Some of the funds have already been spent for architects, fundraising and other approved project expenses.

New pledges and gifts will be added to the existing $2 Million total already received for the Building on the Past: Faithful for the Future Campaign. After congregation approval, we will complete these projects as the timing demands and funding permits. Design and permitting costs will also be shared appropriately among all the projects. As shown above, some of these projects require other projects to be completed before they can be accomplished. Any gift that you are led to contribute should be seen as a non-specified gift to the overall proposal. If you would like to make a specified gift to one of these projects; please contact Pastor Erik Gauss, Ed Kutay or Mike Reid with regard to this possibility.

What is next?

We are sharing this with you, the family of faith at Cross, for a couple reasons. The first, of course, is to pray and continue in prayer for God to lead us forward in accomplishing His Kingdom’s goals. We have approved the next phase which is the construction documents we hope to break ground in the spring of 2022!

The third reason is to invite you and your family to consider a year end gift. We know every family is in a unique situation so not all of you are in a position to give on such short notice. However, for some families the tax law changes in the CARES Act allow for significant, one time tax advantages for people wishing to support non-profit ministries this year only. We ask that you would prayerfully consider Cross’ Building on the Past; Faithful for the Future Campaign.

Join us for Commitment Sunday on October 31!

In Christ,

Pastor Erik Gauss
